Who was the genius who put this site together? Well done! Now we need to find old photos and interesting trivia, such as the winner of the egg and spoon race in 1965 (oh, I think that just could have been my shining moment of glory). I have some old b/w of the Woodside annex gym building circa 1980 in a state of near dereliction. I was surprised how small the gym hall was looking through adult eyes.

Thanks Malcolm. You're right, we need people to send in contributions : anecdotes, memories, lost contacts, favourite teachers (or least favourite teachers!), class photos, other school photos, or any sort of school trivia or memorabilia. Contributions can be posted on the Guestbook / Noticeboards or emailed to me at editor@johnneilson.co.uk. Regards, Alan

John Neilson by far the best school I ever went to.. ok it was the only one. I'm trying to contact other classmates, born in 1960, left in 76-78 and not registered on the dreaded FR. Why not sign in here- it's free, no £5.00 subscription. Isn't it scary that every school building we ever knew is now gone? This website is all we've got kidz....

Hi, I started school in 1945, and left to go to Australia, in 1955. Are there any other oldies out there who like to fiddle on the internet who attended the school in those days. Mr. Macdonald was the Rector, I would love to hear from anyone in my classes.

At last! Another oldie. I was in senior school around 1943/47 when Mr Angus MacDonald was headmaster and remember Miss Crawford, Miss McEwan, Miss Fulton and Miss Anderson also Mr Malcolm Brown, Mr Gilbert Graham, Mr McPherson? My sister Joan (Joy) was also there,3 years ahead of me.My husband Alastair is also a former pupil as is his sister Morag. We would also be interested to hear from classmates. Am enjoying this web site

Never thought I would see the day there was a site on the web for us that went to John Neilson. Past the old place the other day quite sad to see it as a gap site.Got a lot of good and some not so good memories. I left in 1983.(I was the quiet one)1a through 4a. Best of luck with the reunion had I known about it earlier I would have attended. Best wishes to any and all that remember me.

Went into Crombie, the tailors, in Jermyn St, London recently to buy a suit. I saw a tie I really liked and paid for it. On showing it to my wife she asked why I had just bought my John Neilson school tie for £50... Slightly more expensive than buying it from McGeoch's the drapers at the corner of Broomlands and Queen Street. Now when I wear it folk ask me if I went to Gryfindor House at Hogwarts with Harry Potter. Good luck with the re-union tonight.

Hi Alan et all Last nights re-union was a success and a good night was had by all. Some years seem to have better attendees' and unfortunately Alan, our year only had 5 representatives. Dougie Craig, Drew Strang, Audrey Lang, Ann Simpson and myself. Calum Duncan tried to keep in touch by mobile via his sister but we kept losing the connection. We had a grand chat in the end. The post mortem breakfast for those of us staying at the hotel was interesting in that some folk stayed up as late at 4:45 just newsing away. As one female fp said " I had a lot of catching up to do!" A good night and look forward to the next one. Keep up the good work on the web site Alan.

I particularly liked the feature on the 1952's re-union - many of the names I recognised but not the faces in the photos! How we've all aged! I found the site through friends reunited. It's a great site and can best be improved by help from fellow Neilsonians. I liked the picture gallery a lot as looking though the photos and documents brought back some really happy memories. My two brothers David and Craig and sister Lorraine were educated at The Neilson as was my late father Bill Mclauchlan. I started the same day as Alex Cunningham on 3 September 1956 and so much of the input from Alex is very close to my own experiences. I appear in one of his photos, was on the Oban trip and sang in the chorus of the Mikado. I remember Alex had a great interest in trains and he set and followed his own trian timetables around the 'Old School' at playtimes. I am motivated to send in some of my own photos and these will follow. Hello to anyone visit

I was at the old JNI from 1959 to 1964 (left after Fifth Year). Went to Glasgow University then moved to England. Married since 1969. Living in Canada since 1971. Two kids now both married - looking forward to grandkids some day!! Greetings to anyone who remembers me.

Excellent site - nice to see the JNI is not forgotten. I've still kept my old school badge from my blazer despite awful memories of 'Ozzie' at Woodside.

I've just been reading the guestbook entries and I've recognised a few names from the past: david byars, derek walton, boyd yule, and gordon stewart, hello there! I'm living in Toulouse now, married, two kids. Last time I popped over to Paisley I saw the bomb site that used to be JNHS: it's an improvement, a fitting memorial to our wonderful school. Strive in the years that are passing, strive to cherish our name, etc.

Really enjoyed the visit to your user friendly site. I hope to make regular visits as time permits and perhaps catch up with some old friends from the early fifties.

yes wonderful site and well done to all. Thanks Evelyn Reid( and others!)for all your posting of the pics. I have just returned from a holiday in Pasiley seeing my folks and family so nice to see names and pics of yester years. I was at the JNI primary at Woodside and have great memories of Mrs Lorimer the " dinner lady " coming out of the fire exit (with a look of a stroke about to start!)and the entire primary rushing towards her shouting " s-e-c-o-n-d-s !!!!" She must be long gone now but what courage she took opening that fire door after lunch ....... My congrats to you all on the web site and my grateful thnaks for the memory. Found the web site by accident and very glad what a good old dose of nostalgia! Born 1964 and went to JNH from 1974 to 1979 then moved to Aberdeen. So sad schools gone but the web site has some fab photos love the school diary!

How interesting to read of so many former pupils BUT are there any relatives available to tell me what has happened to my fellow classmates from the 1943 to 1949/50 era? Some of the names are Maida Houstoun, May McGowan, Anne Reid, Jean Shanks, Anna Crawford, Isabel Hamilton etc. I did manage to contact Burnett Pender who gave me news of Rolf Hancher, Ronald Cadenhead, Alistair Black and Robert Sheilds. I live in hope!

Nice to read the guestbook and bring back some fond memories of long ago. A few more names to add to the list: Mr. Elder (Science), Messrs. McArthur & Gray (Mathematics - Rms 1 & 2), Mr. Fortune (French - Rm 3). Many years after leaving school, I met Kenneth McKellar in Calgary, Alberta. Kenneth was travelling with the White Heather Concert Party. During that short conversation, Kenneth also mentioned a former student, Robert Urquhart who apparently was in New Zealand at that time and met him under similar circumstances. I've always said that my education at the John Neilson proved beneficial as I pursued a successful engineering career.

I found this website as l was looking for some info about the school to show my sons. They are now at Stewart's Melville College in Edinburgh, a school with a similar ethos and structure to the original JNI. I'm looking forward to having a good look through the site.

Congratulations and thanks to the founder of this website. It's sad to know that the school no longer exists but it's comforting to see there are former pupils who share the nostalgia. I was a pupil at Underwood in Miss Hunter's Primary VI and VII in 59-60 and then 5 years in Secondary School, leaving in 1965. Would be glad to e-hear from anyone who remembers me.

On a recent journey back from the north of Scotland I decided to pay a visit to Paisley for the first time in many years. Although the school is gone, the memories of my time there (1960-1973) came flooding back. I'd love to to hear from anyone from my old primary class.

Most summers, while passing through Paisley on the way to Kennacraig, and thence to Islay, I tip my bunnet to the Old Bowl on the hill, where I was happily incarcerated from 1959 to 1964. I knew that the old school had moved in the late sixties but was unaware, until now, of its later demise. So greetings to all past pupils and teachers, since there are none current !

I was a "pup" from 1952 until 1963. I have just come across the site and will re-visit later. I instantly recognised the name Greer Chadwick, we went thro' primary & secondary together. I even remember that she gave me a "ray-gun" at my 7th birthday party. I also remember Jim Rae. Nice to hear from anyone who remembers me. I am also going to get involved in the bullying debate. I'm not going to name and shame until discussing the subject with my lawyer

A nice feeling to come across the JNI web site, I was a pupil between 1940 and 1952 and certainly remember all the teachers mentioned by Margaret(Hamilton)Jeffrey, and she may well call me another "oldie"! When I launched my academic career Mr.Gow was the rector. I am delighted to find the web site and thank the Editor for a fine piece of work.I would enjoy hearing from some of my old class mates, best wishes to all F.P.'s, Ian Stewart

Good to see the site is still going, I thought I'd better update my details, in case there are still some ex-pupils, of my vintage out there, I started school in 1940, and left in 1955 to take up a new life in Cairns Australia.

My mother is 87 and attended the John Neilson School with her brother Norman. She would have been there from around 1925. She has a tapestry of the dome done by her and now talks alot about the old days. I am doing some research for her!

I talked for 2 hours on the phone yesterday to a friend I haven't seen for 29 years, and it set me thinking about the 1970s, and sent me off to google, where I found this site. Nice to read about what other people are doing -- so many interesting stories. I found out the physical building was gone in an odd way. 2001 I was living in Boston -- I had called a catalogue to have some furniture delivered. The guy who answered had an accent I recognized, he was from Paisley. When I told him what school I had gone to he paused and said "If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? There's no school in the location you are describing -- I've never heard of the place." Hmm, to be honest there were times I thought I wouldn't have minded seeing that building blow up, but knowing someone had really done it (albeit the delomiton guys) -- that came as a shock. Anyway -- fun web site. I was there 1973-76. After much travel, I have been based in Newfoundland (Canada) since 1990 -- but still go home every year, at least once. I have driven by teh hole that was the school a few times, just to check for myself it is really gone. Best to you all. Julie
